| Spectacles of the Real is an ambitious collaboration between the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities (IPRH) and OPENSOURCE Art, the alternative art space in downtown Champaign. The exhibit explores the meaning and limits of realism and its spectacular manifestations. Over twenty-five national and international artists are featured in the show, working in a variety of media, from painting and photography to video and computer art. The work at once challenges and advances the formal and ideological assumptions behind the discourse of verisimilitude. And it does so in work that ranges from political to formal (even formalist) art. The goal is to investigate the relation between realism, the "real," and the image; philosophical realism and the idea of artistic truth; and the resurgence of realism in art and literature. In addition, three panel discussions. More info |
